What were some of your professional highlights of 2021?
In 2021 I teamed up with Cinematographer Tommy Maddox-Upshaw, ASC (SNOWFALL) to teach a reel and website class for upcoming cinematographers of color with over 500 attendees. I also ended up signing over 40 BTL clients of color and women in the matter of 4 months (Johnny Simmons, ASC, Rahimah Yoba, Allyson Fanger, Davon Johnson, Mboni Maumba, Van Hayden). I am still the only African-American in Physical Production in all of North America at any agency. Also helped establish the America division of the HUE List, launched by SPORAS Founder, Joel Honeywell. The UK DP’s directory is a go-to resource for BIPOC BTL crew around the world.
What are you most looking forward to in 2022?
As a representative of the African American community, I hope to continue to find/work with talent that authentically reflects the world today and believes everyone should be able to see themselves represented on the opposite side of the camera. Specifically shining the light on other careers that we as black people do not know are available to us as well (Cinematographers, Production Designers, Line Producers, ect any BTL). Expanding us into these spaces and continue to give advice and encouraging others to stop gatekeeping.
What is your theme word for 2022?
Black Excellence.
